52 Ancestors Week 27 - John Francis Turner

John Francis Turner was born on July 13, 1853, in Batesville, Ohio. He was the 2nd of 12 children born to John E Turner and Elizabeth DeLong. According to census records he worked on his family's farm until he got married.

John Francis Turner married Catherine Louise Butler on February 18, 1874, in Belmont, Ohio. John and Catherine had 10 children. They lived in Ohio for a long time farming, then becoming a teamster. by 1910 they moved to Brooke County West Virginia and he went back to farming.

He died in Follansbee, WV on July 2, 1912.

52 Ancestors Week 26 - Fanny Boweter


Fanny Boweter was born on June 2, 1866, in Yorkshire, England. She was the 4th of 7 children born to William Boweter and Emma Beddoes. She grew up in the Yorkshire area until the age of 17 when she and her family immigrated to Utah. She, her mother, and her younger siblings were on the SS Nevada from Liverpool to New York in 1883. Her father had immigrated the year before to get things ready for the family to come.

On August 10, 1885 she married Frank Hyrum Merryweather in Winter Quarters, Utah. Together Frank and Fanny had 13 children, 4 of whom died in infancy.

Fanny Boweter Merryweather died of pneumonia on February 21, 1951, in Cedar City, Utah, when she was 84 years old.

52 Ancestors Week 25- William Ellison

William Ellison was born on August 30, 1863, in Nottingham, England to Sarah Hemmingway and John Ellison Jr. His mother became a Mormon, but his father never joined the church. His father was killed in a boat accident in England. After his father's death William was baptized a Mormon. His mother eventually remarried once in America.

On 2 September 1872 William, his mother and 3 of his sisters left England and moved to Utah. William married Lovina Clarissa Dye 17 January 1884 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City.

William worked for Provo Woolen Mills, but work was slow, so he went out of town to Salt Lake to work at Deseret Woolen Mills. Lovina had their first child, Sarah, October 24th 1884, William was able to visit for a few days before having to go back to work. Between work at the Deseret Woolen Mills, Provo Woolen Mills and working on the Dye farm, they were able to move out on their own. They rented one room for 2 dollars a month from Sidney Bailey. While at the Bailey's house they had their second child, John.

In March 1887 they rented a house and 2 lots for 3 dollars a month, and could make improvements to the property for part of the rent. They grew a lot of their own food, as well as having a cow, a pig and some chickens. By the end of 1887 they had their third child, Clarissa. In January 1888 they bought a house for 300 dollars, fully paying it off in January 1889.

They stayed in the Provo area the rest of their lives. They had 10 more children, the last two being born after they started having grandkids. Their 7th child, Richard Heber, died of croup at 5 years old, but all the others survived to adulthood.

William Ellison died on March 12, 1921, in Provo, Utah, when he was 57 years old.

52 Ancestors Week 24- Frank Merryweather

Frank Hyrum Merryweather was born on April 30, 1864, in Newton, England to Sarah Ann Thick and Mark Merryweather. He was the second of nine children. His father died when he was 14. While in England he became a Mormon. He immigrated to America in July 1880 on the ship Wisconsin, coming into New York from Liverpool, along with many other Mormons.


On 10 September 1884 Frank became a US Citizen, while living in Utah. Frank married Fanny Boweter on August 10, 1885, in Winter Quarters, Utah. Together Frank and Fanny had 13 children, 4 of whom died in infancy. He spent much of his adult life as a farmer and butcher.

Frank Hyrum Merryweather died on December 3, 1947, in Cedar City, Utah, when he was 83 years old.

Mary Ann Gregory was born on April 30, 1852, in Yorkshire, England to Mary Ann Alderson and Robert Gregory. She was the oldest of 8 children. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Durham county.
Mary Ann married Edward Edwards on November 6, 1869, in Durham, England, when she was 17 years old.
In May 1875 Mary Ann and Edward immigrated on the Adriatic from Liverpool to New York. They moved directly to Pennsylvania where they had 3 sons. Then they started moving west. In 1887 they had another son in Iowa, and then moved on the Nebraska where they had 2 more sons. By 1909 they had moved to Colorado.
In 1923 Edward died. Mary Ann Gregory died on May 5, 1926, in Paonia, Colorado, when she was 74 years old.

52 Ancestors Week 22- Dietrich Hasemeyer

Dietrich Henry Hasemeyer was born on March 4, 1859, in Germany to Sophia and William Fredrick Hasemeyer. He had one brother names William.
According to census records the Hasemeyer family immigrated around 1879 from Germany to America. Dietrich married Magda Sophia Elizabeth Schmidt on January 2, 1889, in Pueblo, Colorado.
In the following 5 years they had 4 children, 2 girls and then 2 boys. He lived in Colorado most of his adult life and worked as a carpenter. He was sometimes known as Kietrich Hasemeyer.
5 months before his death he moved to Utah to be closer to his children, who were coal miners. He died of a sudden heart attack on November 2, 1925, in Price, Utah, when he was 66 years old.

52 Ancestors Week 21- Irma Henri

Irma Henri was born on July 6, 1872, in Ch√Ętelineau, Belgium to Adele Dumont and Jean Baptiste Henri. She had at least 1 older sister, Maria Celina Henri.
Irma and Emile Piraux had a daughter, Helene, on November 14, 1897, in Charleroi, Belgium. Irma married Emile Francois Joseph Piraux on August 6, 1898, in Ch√Ętelineau, Belgium, when she was 26 years old. Helene passed away on January 28, 1899.
They had 2 more children while living in Belgium: Marcelin Leopold Joseph Piraux and Josephine Maria Piraux. Then in Dec 1901 they all immigrated to America on the SS Nederland from Antwerp to Philadelphia.
They moved around Washington and Allegheny counties in Pennsylvania for several years, having 5 more children. The youngest, Ector, is only recorded on the naturalization papers for Emile (and family), so we assume he died in infancy.
In 1929 Emile died. Irma died on July 4, 1947, in Smith, Pennsylvania, when she was 74 years old, of a Cerebral Hemorrhage.
