Emma Beddoes was born on November 14, 1835 in Shipton, Shropshire, England. She was one of the 7 children of William Beddoes and Emma Ward.

The Beddoes family moved to Bilston for a period of time where Emma married William Boweter in 1865. Before her marriage to William Boweter, she had 2 children. Together they had 4 children. Many of the family then went up to Yorkshire to work in the coal mines. They eventually came back to Bilston before they emigrated to the U.S.

While they were in Yorkshire Emma's oldest brother went to Leeds and was converted to Mormonism. When he returned to the family, many of them also joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from about 1868-1871. Emma, William, their 4 children, and one of her older sons came to America in September 1883 on the Ship Nevada. 3 of Emma's brothers and their families also immigrated in 1883. They moved directly to Utah.

Emma's husband, William Boweter survived a mining explosion on 1 May 1900 in the Scofield #4 mine in Scofield, Carbon County, Utah. 52 Ancestors Week 31- Mark Merryweather

This weeks theme is "Easy". So I chose one of the ancestors that has been researched by several people before me. When your family is Mormon, chances are there is at least one genealogist in the bunch, and they have done some of the work for you, making it easy to find.

Mark Merryweather was born on October 24, 1836, in Newton, England to Martha Gray and George "Mathew" Merryweather. He was child number 7 out of 8 born in that family.

Mark Merryweather married Sarah Ann Thick on April 3, 1858, in Newton, England. They had 9 children.

According to the book of remembrance of Gayle Preston Wood, Mark was a detective for the Scotland Yard; I have not found evidence to support or refute this claim.

Mark Merryweather died on April 14, 1879, in Wiltshire, England, when he was 42 years old.

52 Ancestors Week 14 - William Mark Merryweather

The theme this week is Favorite Photo. My father has been doing genealogy as long as I can remember, and my grandmother did some as well. I have seen some of my old family photos hanging on the walls of my home for many years. One of my favorites is of the Merryweather family. So, today I'm going to write about William "Bill" Mark Merryweather.

William Merryweather is the boy standing in the back on the left
William Mark Merryweather was born Jan 15, 1891 in Scofield, Utah. His parents were Frank Merryweather and Fanny Boweter, the 4th of 13 children (4 of whom died in infancy). He lived most of his life in Utah, with short periods spent out of state for work. He married Ida Lovina Ellison in March 29, 1916 in Salt Lake City. They made their home in Cedar City, Utah. They had 6 girls, 4 survived into adulthood.
Bill was a plumber, and started the Southern Utah Plumbing and Heating Company with his brother-in-law Warren Cox. An excellent plumber, he worked on plumbing for several national parks, and at the Hoover Dam. He also did work at the St George LDS Temple.
He and Ida became temple workers in St George, and eventually moved there permanently. He died May 9, 1985, 94 years old, in Springville, Utah, and was buried in the Cedar City Cemetery.

52 Ancestors Wk4 - Ida Lovina Ellison

This week's theme is 'closest to your birthday', and since I already did someone with whom I share a birthday, I went with the next closest birthday (the day after mine).

Ida Lovina Ellison, 6th child of Lovina Clarissa Dye from last week, was born Nov 10, 1892 in Provo Utah. Having 12 brothers and sisters, I'm sure she grew up in a busy, noisy, house. She met her husband William "Bill" Merryweather dancing in the 2nd Ward Amusement Hall in Provo. They loved to dance, and went out whenever they could. Bill took her around on his bicycle. After several years of courting, and Bill moving to Cedar City, they decided to get married.
Ida and Bill were married Mar 29, 1916 in the Salt Lake Temple, and made their home in Cedar City, Utah (which took them 3 days to drive to in their model-T after the wedding).

Bill was a plumber, and not too long after getting married, he and his brother-in-law started the Southern Utah Plumbing and Heating company. While Bill was off plumbing, Ida worked with children in their church, and sewed. Soon they started having children of their own. They had 6 girls, 4 survived into adulthood (3 still alive today). Their 3rd child, Eva, died at 6 months old from pneumonia; and their youngest was stillborn.

During her married life, Ida got to travel around Utah and the surrounding areas. Bill was a good plumber and worked in several national parks including, Zion, Bryce, and the Grand Canyon. He also did plumbing in the St George Temple. Ida did sewing for the temple and the workers there. She spent many nights sewing burial clothing for people in the area. For a time she also served as a stake missionary.

In the 1950's Bill and Ida became temple workers in St George, doing genealogy too. And in 1957 they made St George their permanent home.

Ida Lovina Ellison Merryweather died on Sep 30, 1980, at 87 years old, in Springville, Utah and was buried in the Cedar City Cemetery.

Merryweather Family Photo

I'm working on more scrapbook pages. Here is the Frank and Fanny Merryweather family. I have been able to identify all the people in it. But, there are some pictures in the background that I haven't. I was told that the family specifically took their photo here to have those pictures in it, because it is grandparents. Unfortunately I don't yet know which grandparents they are.

The people in the photo are:
Raymond Earl Merryweather (1901-1990)
Austin Oliver Merryweather (1895-1958)
Walter Leroy Merryweather (1905-1984)
Zilpha Frances Merryweather (1897-1984)  --I think my mom looks a lot like her
Fanny Boweter (1866-1951)
Frank Hyrum Merryweather (1864-1947)
Emma Minnie Merryweather (1887-1962)
Sarah Ethel Merryweather (1886-1944)
Eva Kate Merryweather (1892-1941)
William Mark Merryweather (1891-1985)
Frank Albert Merryweather (1889-1971)

The family also had 4 infant losses/still births, in 1895 (twin brother to Austin Oliver, lived less than a month), 1900 (a girl), 1903 (a girl), and 1904 (partial miscarriage during Walter Leroy pregnancy perhaps?).
